Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to be filmed in 2 parts

Posted by: dijay In: Entertainment

The final book in the wildly successful series will be made into two films

J.K. Rowling’s last “Potter” installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” will be split into two parts on the big screen. The first film is slated for release in November 2010, with part two following in May 2011.

The reason behind this, according to the studio, is because they cannot remove any elements from this book. But personally, I think looking at their past result, doing a “not too bad” job at the office (the “Potter” film franchise has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office.), it is not difficult to decide to extend the scenes and earn extra bucks, it is after all the last one.

Or could it be the competitive spirit to another successful “book to movie” franchise, Lord of the Rings. The epic fantasy novel by J.R.R. Tolkien had outdo Harry Potter in the US box office and another famous Tolkien tome “The Hobbit,” is also being split into two live-action movies set for back-to-back shooting to begin next year.

Just to take a look at how Harry Potter had done in the US box office:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) $317,557,891
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) $261,970,615
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) $249,358,727
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) $289,994,397
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) $292,000,866
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2008) November 21st, 2008
